Step by step I continue to move forward
Sometimes it’s a pleasant stroll down a wooded path
Where I can hear the sounds of squirrels scampering
Among the trees or the birds calling
Feel the soft breeze move and gently touch my skin
The crunch of the dried leaves carpeting the path.

Step by step I continue to move forward
Sometimes I crawl hand over hand up a steep incline
The rocks biting into my hands as I pull myself up
My pack weighing me down, begging me to quit, to sit -
If but for a moment but I know too well the rule of inertia
Giving into those thoughts for a moment is not an option.

So whether it is the gentle woods and the carpeted path
Or the sharp incline with the biting rocks,
I know I must continue to move forward.
Giving up is not an option.
I know I must continue to move forward.
I know that each path must come and go in its own time.

  1. This poem has great sensory details. I felt the contrast of the soft breeze gentling touching your skin to the sharp incline and biting rocks. Your ending is strong and inspiring and captures what I see as you never quit sort of attitude.
“I know that each path must come and go in its own time.”
